PROFILE

Born in South Wales, twenty-six year old conductor Scott Ellaway studied music as a scholar at Oxford University, with additional study at the Royal Academy of Music. Despite his young age, Ellaway has already gained a wealth of experience working with some of the world’s top orchestras and artists and has recently been appointed Artistic Director of Orchestra Europa, Europe's Orchestral Academy.

Ellaway made his professional debut at the age of 21 with players from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Welsh National Opera whilst still an undergraduate at Oxford University. Since graduating in the summer of 2005, he has undertaken a number of high-profile engagements. In the 2005/6 season Ellaway worked with the New World Symphony, Miami, the BBC Concert Orchestra, the Oxford Chamber Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra, London, becoming the youngest British conductor to direct the group since Sir Simon Rattle. The press commented that Ellaway "delivered a quality of sound and sensitivity to tonal nuance that was astounding".

Alongside his own conducting work, Ellaway has studied with and assisted many of the world’s leading conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Sir Andrew Davis, Michael Tilson Thomas, Vernon Handley, Jorma Panula and Charles Hazlewood. As a firm advocate of contemporary music Ellaway has also worked extensively with composer Robert Saxton.

During the 2008/09 season Ellaway will be working at the Cheltenham Festival with Nicola Benedetti, along with Sir Thomas Allen, Ayako Uehara, Alexander Melnikov, Tasmin Little, Vasily Petrenko, Yan Pascal Tortelier, Martyn Brabbins and the BBC Singers.
